![]() Arab culture is ancient, vast, and distinguished. It has been shaped by other cultures down through the centuries. What we call now the Middle East was, for centuries, the crossroads of the world. It was the center of vast trade networks connecting people of Europe with people of Asia and Africa. People from all over the world, they were passing through Arabia and interacted with the local populations. This provides rich and deep cultural traditions for modern Arabs. But, because of the events in the Twentieth Century, Westerners have a very distorted idea of Arabs. Ahlan wa sahlan. Welcome.

For those of you who are interested, the dictionary is called Diwan Baladna (the dictionary of our country). I've had multiple Jordanians take a look at the book and they all thought it was great. While walking through the market their was a stand selling these dictionaries. The vendors themselves looked like bouncers you might see outside a club. It turns out though that they were the dictionary's co-authors. Most of my friends bought copies there and we all had our books signed by the authors.

Reading Through Life

It’s a great resource for people who are just learning the basics of Arab culture. It covers all kinds of topics, with generalities for how things work in Arab culture and some specifics about each topic for Jordanian Arabs in particular. Each section is very short, and the author uses simple enough language for non-Arabic speakers to understand the ideas he’s talking about.
as a basic primer on Arab life, culture, and habits, Diwan Baladna is definitely a great place to start.
